I recently posted about how to get the iphone unlocked from the US for less than directly from the UK and all the benefits of doing so such as getting it sooner and quicker than waiting around until November.
Here are some further thoughts:
1. It appears that if you purchase it directly, you get the benefit of receiving a UK warranty.
2. It is actually almost the same price... if you are one of the unlucky sods that get taxed
3. According to someone who purchased the phone already - everytime you want to upgrade the firmware on the phone, the phone gets locked again! So the only way to get it permanently unlocked requires hardware hacking - the old standard soldering way which voids the warranty!
There is also talk that Apple may be able to unlock the phone for free. They are NOT doing this in the US so I don't see why they would do so in the UK. You either have to HACK it or take out a contract with O2...
Rumour also, is that there will be a new 3G version coming in the new year so if you can sit tight, might be worthwhile waiting just a tad bit longer...
